Spring MDTP Diagnostic Testing and Workshops

Get the Big Picture of Your Students’ Mathematical Learning

The New Year is a great time to do MDTP diagnostic testing and get feedback on your students’ mathematical progress. You can use information from the detailed results reports to see how far your students have come, and where they still have gaps and misconceptions. This information can streamline your instruction helping you design more effective and efficient units and lessons.

New Workshop: It’s a Treasure Hunt!

You’ve given the MDTP test, where do you go next?

MDTP diagnostic results reports hold a wealth of information about your students and classes and important mathematics. This workshop, for both new and experienced users, will help you get the most of those results. Together we will take the time to unearth all the nuggets of information in your results. We will learn how to set realistic instructional goals, and participate in and design some effective instructional activities to help realize those goals.

Prior to the workshop, you will administer an MDTP test to at least one of your classes*. After the workshop, you will know more about your students, effective math instruction, and have tools and activities to improve your instruction and their learning.

Saturday, January 26, 2019, from 9:00-12:00.
UCLA Mathematical Sciences Building.

This workshop is offered at no charge to participants. Light breakfast will be served.

* If you are new to MDTP testing, you can learn more at our January 12 workshop.

MDTP Online Training Workshop

Get ready to learn about your students’ mathematical needs and plan more effective, efficient instruction for the new year!

This three hour workshop will introduce you to MDTP diagnostic tests and the free, online testing platform.  We will learn how to navigate the online platform; set up classes; add enrollment; and assign and administer tests.  We will discuss how to use the online platform to analyze your results and set instructional goals. We will explore math activities that support and improve student thinking and get students communicating mathematically.

Saturday, January 12, 2019, from 9:00-12:00.     UCLA Mathematical Sciences Building. Sign-up here

This workshop is offered at no charge to participants.  Breakfast will be served.

Get Ready, An Upgraded MDTP Online Platform Is Coming Soon!

Version two* is expected in time for spring testing

MDTP is moving to an upgraded diagnostic testing platform to alleviate the throughput problems that we have experienced in the past. MDTP will transfer all data from the old platform (http://mdtponline.ucsd.edu) to the new platform in December.

After the data transfer, you will be automatically redirected to the new platform when you log in.  All of your data will be there. You will notice that the look of the new platform is a little different:  the navigation menu is on the top rather than the left side, and there are a few upgrades to functionality, but we have found that users make the transfer fairly easily.

Below is a screen shot of the teacher screen that pops-up after you log in.

NewPlatformScreen

Yes the look is different, but you still add classes, assign tests, add enrollment, proctor tests, and view the results reports, just as before.

As always, we are here to support you through the transition however you need, and that includes online or even onsite visits.

* Version two is in use by many schools already and is currently accessed at http://mdtpdiagnostic.ucsd.edu.

Field Testing 2018

Field testing insures that MDTP tests are of the highest quality, reflect the performance and needs of California math classrooms, and give math educators the information they need to be more effective.

This year, MDTP is introducing a new High School Readiness assessment that updates the current HS readiness test to more fully align with the goals of the California Common Core standards.  The Middle School Readiness, Geometry, and Algebra 2 Readiness field tests have been updated to reflect results from last year’s field testing.

These diagnostic field tests assesses students’ readiness in foundational topics necessary for success in California Common-Core aligned classrooms as described below:

Common Core Aligned Readiness Field Tests* Test Code Field Test Year
Middle School Readiness

Field-testing should occur in Grade 6 classrooms.  35 questions.

MS35D18

2

High School (Algebra 1/ Integrated Math 1)  Readiness.
45 questions.

HS45D18

Geometry Readiness
45 questions

GR45D18

3

Algebra 2 Readiness

If appropriate, we recommend that you use the field test versions, but be advised that field testers also agree to administer a post test and a brief end of course survey in the spring. Field testing is vital to maintaining the reliability and high quality of MDTP assessments and results, so we encourage and appreciate your participation.

MDTP Online Users: Reset Your Passwords!

All MDTP online diagnostic testing users will need to reset their passwords starting August 1st in order to gain access to the site. This policy is designed to prevent users who are no longer associated with a school or district from accessing student data.

When logging into the diagnostic platform , enter your school email, then click “I have forgotten my password” to start the process.  Detailed instructions can be found here.

End of the year diagnostic testing

The end of the school year is one of the best times to administer MDTP diagnostic tests.  The results of testing helps teachers and math departments identify math topics learned well and those that students still struggle with.  The results can be used to dig deeper into the conceptual foundations and related misconceptions of math topics crucial for improving future classes.  The teacher can also distribute individualized diagnostic letters to help students reflect back on their mathematical successes and to plan for summer study.

In addition to diagnostic tests, MDTP offers high school placement tests and written response items, as well as, professional development to use these materials effectively.

Remember, MDTP materials and services are provided free-of-charge.
